Kun seurailee työttömiä koskevaa uutisointia ja some kommentteja, niin kuinka voi olla mahdollista, ettei moni ajattele asiaa kovinkaan pitkälle?
Monilla ihmisillä on sellainen ajatus, että mm. ilmaistyö (työ jota työttömät laitetaan tekemään työttömyyskorvausta ja 9e kulukorvausta vastaan) on hyvä asia. Perusteluna on usein että ”eivätpähän makoile kotona sohvalla” tai ”tekevätpä edes jotain rahansa eteen” tai ”eivät juhli toisten verorahoilla”. Tämä johtuu siitä yksinkertaisesta ajatusvirheestä, että sen luullaan olevan parempi, kun työtön tekee mitä tahansa, koska työläisenkin pitää tehdä työtä päivittäin.

Ilmaistyövoimaa käyttävät yritykset voivat huoletta painaa tekemiensä palveluiden tai tuotteiden hintoja alaspäin saadakseen enemmän asiakkaita. Tämä aiheuttaa sen, että työntekijöilleen palkkaa maksavat yritykset joutuvat epäedulliseen asemaan, eivätkä voi kilpailla hinnoissa muuten kuin irtisanomalla työtekijöitään.
Lopputuloksena on että hallituksen luoma uusi järjestelmä työttömyyden vähentämiseksi lisää työttömyyttä ja siirtää verorahoja yritysten omistajien pussiin.
